LSADT was launched in 1995 and included twins aged 75 years or older. The twins were followed every second year until and including 2005, and in 2007 blood samples from a subset of twins was collected.
In 1997, 1999 and 2001 additional cohorts were included. Twins were invited for participation regardless of vital status of the co-twin. In total, 4,731 twins and 1,152 pairs completed the baseline assessments. The study was initiated in order to study the importance of genes and environment for different domains of health and functioning in elderly twins. Data were collected through comprehensive interview-based questionnaires, and physical and cognitive examinations. Also, biological samples were collected.
