The Faculty of Science nominates Lene Hau Vestergaardas honorary doctor. Danish-born Lene Hau Vestergaard is Professor of Physics at Harvard University (Department of Applied Physics). In 1999, she caused an international sensation when she and her research team succeeded in drastically slowing down the speed of light from 300,000 kilometres per second to 17 metres per second. This was done by cooling a small cigar-shaped cloud of sodium atoms to a temperature just a few millionths of a degree warmer than absolute zero at -273.15 degrees.
