Law degree programme to be created at SDU in Esbjerg

From the autumn of 2023, SDU will offer a law degree programme in Esbjerg. This is clear after RUVU (the advisory committee for the evaluation of the offering of higher education programmes) has approved SDU’s application for the education. This was announced by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen during a visit to SDU in Esbjerg on Thursday morning.

SDU’s plans to provide the opportunity to earn a law degree in Esbjerg will become a reality from next year, when SDU welcomes the first batch of students to the campus.

The RUVU committee of the Ministry of Higher Education and Science has approved the application, and the joyful news was presented on Thursday by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen during her visit to SDU in Esbjerg.

The Department of Law is enthusiastic

According to Hanne Søndergaard Birkmose, Head of Department at the Department of Law, they are looking forward to get the new educational offering off the ground.

- We are extremely pleased that the application has been approved. It is crucial for SDU that a law degree programme in Esbjerg contributes to educating graduates in law with a high professional level while also supporting the successful retention of graduates in the local area.

- Now we can concretise the splendid work, among other things, with programme regulations, which we have already begun working on. We are very much looking forward to that, she says.

The department is working towards enrolling the first 50 students into the undergraduate programme by September 2023, with the first admission of graduate students set to follow in 2026.

Important addition to SDU’s regional profile

SDU enjoys a strong regional anchoring, thanks to its education campuses in Sønderborg, Kolding, Odense, Slagelse and Esbjerg. Today, more than 20 % of SDU’s students are enrolled into undergraduate programmes outside the main campus in Odense.

SDU continuously works to support the important agenda of ambitious education programmes regionally, and therefore Jens Ringsmose, Rector of SDU, is also enthusiastic about the news.

- The new programme align well with SDU’s overall strategy of being a regionally-based university ranking among the best in the world. We ensure excellent research-based educational environments through close collaboration with key players in our campus cities, which are now being strengthened in Esbjerg. We are very happy with this, and the approval will also benefit the local business community, he says.
